Big Lots ribbon cutting
BOLINGBROOK — A ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration will be at 9 a.m. Friday for the new Big Lots store at 111 S. Weber Road. Big Lots district manager Rick Nordaker will present $2,500 to Jaime McGee Elementary School. Michael Zolecki, principal, will accept the check on behalf of the school.
Big Lots offers consumers bargain-priced merchandise, including brand-name closeouts, seasonal products, consumables, furniture, housewares, toys and gifts. The 24,000-square-foot Bolingbrook store is one of 80 stores the closeout retailer is opening in 2010.
Grand Haven open house
ROMEOVILLE — The Grand Haven Adult Resort Community at 1520 Grand Haven Road will hold its second open house at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The gated community for people over the age of 55 is one-half mile west of Weber Road, on the north side of Renwick Road. The open house coincides with the community’s eighth anniversary celebration.

JOLIET — PeopleFirstBank hired John ”Jack” Masterson as executive vice president and chief lending officer. Masterson fills the vacancy of David Stanton who was promoted to president and CEO of the bank in late 2009. Masterson will be responsible for the bank’s commercial, consumer and residential lending.
His banking career spans over 27 years, serving most recently as senior vice president/senior loan officer in the Metropolitan Bank Group in a commercial lending management role. Masterson received a bachelor’s in business administration from St. Norbert College, DePere, Wis. He also earned an MBA from Loyola University in 1990.

Lockport chamber gala
LOCKPORT — The Lockport chamber held its first annual Autumn Dinner Gala at Narnia Estates. During the Oct. 15 event, three businesses were honored as Businesses of the Year: Homer Tree Service at the local level, Advocate Christ Medical Center and Hope Children’s Hospital at the regional level and Walmart at the national level.
O’Neil Funeral Home was the recipient of the Adelmann Improvement Award, which was named after Howard “Bunny” Adelmann who led countless efforts to improve Lockport.

Wind turbine construction
UNIVERSITY PARK — Governors State University got the green light last month for an on-campus wind turbine. Warren Ribley, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, announced a $153,000 grant for the 50 kilowatt turbine.
Construction of the 120-foot-tall wind turbine will begin in January and is expected to take six to nine months. The turbine will provide 35 percent of the power for GSU’s Family Development Center and save about $14,000 a year in energy costs.
Local ‘model’ takes title
CHICAGO — Briana Smith of Bolingbrook captured the title at the “Mario, Make Me a Model” campaign during the Wave of Fashion show at Fashion Focus Chicago 2010.
Jennifer Phillips of Minooka also was among the finalists. The contest included a model makeover from Mario Tricoci Hair Salons & Day Spas. All of the finalists will be featured in a fashion advertorial spread in Chicago magazine’s December issue and are being considered for a modeling contract with Ford Models.

Fundraiser collect $44k
NAPERVILLE — Through its inaugural Test in the West charity fundraiser, Ryan Companies US, which has industrial parks in the Joliet area, collected $44,000 for donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
The $44,000 donated by Ryan Companies equates to more than 350,000 pounds of food that can be purchased by NIFB.
Think! Energy with Nicor
NAPERVILLE — Nearly 5,000 fifth-grade students at 52 schools in Northern Illinois are learning about energy efficiency this month through the Think! Energy with Nicor Gas program. In addition to the instructional materials each school receives for participating in the program, students will help their classroom receive a $100 mini-grant if they complete their home energy report card. Sustainability award
CHAMPAIGN — Hendrickson Bumper and Trim in Joliet and Governors State University in University Park have both received the 2010 Governor’s Sustainability Award for significant achievements in protecting the environment, helping sustain the future and improving the economy.
GSU was the only university recognized for its sustainability efforts. The awards were presented on Oct. 28 by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center during a luncheon in Champaign. The ISTC is a unit of the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability at the University of Illinois.
